  • Ossie McCutcheon Trophy regatta Wrap Up.
  • Calendar dates 2019-2020 FFI-V Season and Next Worlds.
  • 58th Australian Championships Notice of Race issued.
  • Ian Rainey appointed as next State Measurer for Victoria.
  • FFI-V Membership Renewal is now due for 2019-2020 season.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This year the Ossie McCutcheon Trophy regatta was sailed at Davey’s Bay Yacht Club on Port Phillip on the weekend of 26th & 27th October 2019. The Ossie Mac regatta is organised by Flying Fifteen International - Victoria as a coaching regatta before the State and National championships. We would like to thank Gavin Dagley
once again for coaching this year, the feedback on Gavin every year is
overwhelmingly positive.

Although Gavin coaches both days of the regatta, competitors have five scheduled races over two sessions on one of the days. This allows us flexibility to get the races in on the day with the best conditions. Due to a heavy Northerly wind and swell on Saturday we stayed ashore and Gavin tailored a coaching session with group discussion and video examples. It was great to see some familiar faces from neighbouring clubs come and learn on Saturday, hopefully we can convert that to more entries next year.

On Sunday the seven boats raced in abating North-westerly winds, challenging competitors with shifts and pressure variances across the course. The key was being able to make the most while the pressure was on but change gears for the afternoon lack of pressure and difficult swell.

Lewis Davies and John Radnell in The Flying Flamingo 3890 took home the silverware for a third year in a row with three bullets and two seconds. Stephen Fries and Richard Machin in Surprise by GIVERAUS 3651 travelled from Sandringham for the regatta and performed strongly all day, finishing second overall with a bullet in race two. Stephen and Richard will be even more dangerous in Queensland and the Worlds in Fremantle with the arrival of their new boat. The morning conditions favoured the larger crews who were powered up while others depowered, but that didn’t stop Handicap Trophy winners Shane Davies and James Owen-Smith securing a fourth place in race 4 in their Silver boat Ffidelity 3238 (with a nice new Irwin jib too).

FFI-V July 2019 Bulletin continued:

The Flamingo boys did well to maintain pace in the lighter afternoon conditions but were stunned by Dale Collings and Wayne Fallows in Aussie Falcon 3930 who sped away in the final work and had ten boat-lengths in the bank at the end of race five.

Tim Cobb and Anton Tibbits in the Classic Affrodite 962 travelled from Apollo Bay for the regatta, a huge effort from them and always a pleasure hosting our visiting yachties.

Finally, the committee would like to thank Gavin Dagley again for coaching, and Davey’s Bay Yacht Club with their volunteers and Commodore Sue Thompson for hosting the event and warm hospitality. We look forward to holding more FFIV events at Davey’s Bay in future seasons.

See you next at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in January!

John Radnell - FFIV Committee
